FAQs

General Questions

1) When does my license expire?

All Nebraska Board of Barber Examiner licenses expire on June 30 of even numbered years.

2) How can I pay the fees for my license?

If renewing before the license expires, you may submit payment for renewal by check, money order, certified check or cash if you are making payment by mail or in person. Please include the renewal notice along with the proper fee.

Payments are now available online through PayPort via our website with the use of bank accounts, bankcards, or credit-type cards.

Payment is available in person at our office located at

If renewing AFTER the license has expired, there will be an additional fee assessed.

3) My license has expired, how can I renew it?

There will be late or restoration fees incurred on expired licenses. We recommend calling the Board Office for proper fee amounts.

4) I am currently licensed in a different state and would like to obtain a Nebraska license, how can I do this?

All Nebraska Board of Barber Examiner licenses expire on June 30 of even numbered years.

Contact the Board office for this procedure, as Nebraska does have reciprocity with many states, however each circumstance may differ.

There are 2 required forms:

  1. Nebraska's "Licensure by Reciprocity or Credentials"

and

  1. The license certification from your current licensing state

Both forms are required.

Additionally, there is a fee for processing and licensure when the application has been approved.

5) I am currently licensed in Nebraska and would like to obtain a barber license from another state, what should I do?

You must contact the licensing office in the state in which you wish to gain licensure for instructions, additionally this may require a license certification from our office.

6) How can I make a name or mailing address change?

At the bottom of each page on our website you may use the "Address Change" link to make necessary contact changes of licensees. (Not valid for shop address changes).

7) I work at more than one barbershop: do I need a license at each location?

You must display all current licenses at the location you are present and working. Our office does issue duplicate licenses for this situation to avoid damage or loss of license in transition.

8) I have a current Nebraska Barber License: can I work in a cosmetology salon?

A person licensed only as a barber may only work in a licensed barbershop. Shops and salons may hold both a barbershop and a cosmetology salon license at the same location.

9) I am a Nebraska licensed cosmetologist: can I work in a barbershop?

A barbershop must also be licensed as a cosmetology salon in order for a Nebraska licensed cosmetologist to work there.

10) What is the procedure to file a complaint?

At the bottom of the each page on our website is a link "Complaint Form" for this process.

11) Does Nebraska issue a temporary barber license?

NO, to perform acts of barbering, you must have a registered barber license.

4) I am opening a new barbershop, what do I need to do?

You must submit a completed "New Shop Application", sketch of floor plans (either commercial or residential) and the application fee.

Application forms are found on our website under the "Applications" link.

A list of shop requirements can be found in Chapter 3 "Rules & Regulations."

5) I am relocating my current barbershop to a new location, what do I need to do?

You must submit a completed "Change of Location" application, sketch of floor plans (either commercial or residential) and the application fee.

6) I am purchasing an existing licensed barbershop, what do I need to do?

You must submit a completed "Transfer of Ownership" application and application fee.

7) I am closing my barbershop, what do I need to do?

Please contact the Board office to confirm the shop closure and submit the date of closure.

8) I am renting a chair and space in my barbershop to a licensed barber, what do I need to do?

It is the responsibility of the shop owner to insure all working persons are properly licensed.

Students

1) What are the requirements to attend Nebraska barber schools?

A student must be seventeen years of age and a high school diploma or its equivalent if attending an accredited Nebraska barber school.

2) What are Nebraska requirements to receive a certificate of registration to practice barbering?
  1. High School Diploma or GED,
  2. At least seventeen years of age,
  3. Completed 1,800 hours of training in a school of barbering,
  4. Graduated from a barber school approved by the Nebraska Board of Barber Examiners, and
  5. Passed an examination conducted by the Nebraska Board of Barber Examiners.
3) I have an active Nebraska cosmetology license, what must I do to earn a Nebraska barber license?

A Nebraska licensed cosmetologist holding a current license who attends a school of barbering shall be given one thousand (1,000) hours credit toward the course hours required for graduation and pass the registered barber examination.

4) I have accumulated some barber school hours in the past and want to re-enroll in barber school, what should I do?

Contact the Board office, and submit an application for enrollment of barber school and any other documents required to the Board office for review, as each individual case is unique.

5) I attended barber school in a different state and want to complete schooling in Nebraska, what should I do?

Contact the Board office, and submit any documents supporting previous schooling along with required documents for enrollment of barber school.

Examination

1) What are Nebraska requirements for examination to earn a barber license?
  1. High School Diploma or GED,
  2. At least seventeen years of age,
  3. Completed 1,800 hours of training in a school of barbering,
  4. Graduated from a barber school approved by the Nebraska Board of Barber Examiners, and
  5. Passed an examination conducted by the Nebraska Board of Barber Examiners.
2) If I fail only one part of the examination, do I have to take both parts over to earn a registered barber certificate?

You are only required to retake the failed portion of the examination.

3) How long after I take the examination before I receive my results?

We will contact you with examination results usually within one week, providing you have submitted all necessary documents prior to examination, the exception is instructor exam results, which can take longer.

Instructors

1) How can I earn a Nebraska Barber Instructor License?

Nebr. Rev. Stat. 71-208.02,

  1. He or she has completed at least eighteen hours of college credit at or above the postsecondary level, including at least three credit hours each in

    1. methods of teaching,
    2. curriculum development,
    3. special vocational needs,
    4. educational psychology,
    5. speech communications, and
    6. introduction to business;
  2. He or she has been a licensed and actively practicing barber for the one year immediately preceding application, except that for good cause the board may waive the requirement that the applicant be an actively practicing barber for one year or that such year immediately precede application;
  3. He or she has served as a registered assistant barber instructor under the supervision of an active, full-time, registered barber instructor, as provided in subsection (5) of this section, for nine months immediately preceding application for registration, except that for good cause the board may waive the requirement that such nine month immediately precede application;

    ALTERNATIVELY, a person may also use the Alternate Instructor Program approved by the Board. Contact the Board office for details.
  4. He or she has passed an examination prescribed by the board; and
  5. He or she has paid the fees prescribed by section 71-219.
